Volunteer Tutor Program: Day 5

Last night's session was a lot of fun because we all had to take part in a simulated tutoring situation. Since we all speak English, our facilitator hinted that those who can speak a second language can teach that language. And I did! I chose to teach Filipino.

We were grouped into three and we each had a turn to be tutor, learner, and observer. The topic I chose was parts of the body which I taught using the song "Paa, Tuhod, Balikat, Ulo" and were given 5 minutes to deliver the lesson. I taught the lesson to a fellow tutor who was originally from Vietnam. So I sang her the song with matching actions a couple of times and asked her to repeat after me although she just refused to sing it, hehe. When she got used to pronouncing the words, I taught her to answer the question "Saan" and the possessives "mo", "ko", and "ito". And when the 5 minutes was up she was able to point to and identify he "paa, tuhod, balikat, at ulo"! Funny thing was, my groupmate who was supposed to observe me and give me feedback ended up being a learner, too and that was more than a positive feeedback for me.

One Wednesday to go and I'm done!
